Sheriff weighs in on evolution of sex trafficking and prostitution on social media

I wanted to bring this to everyone’s attention. On the surface there is nothing new here. People have been operating private prostitution sites on Facebook for a long time.  We know that.

However, in the past couple of weeks, Facebook has announced (along with Pro Publica) that they are offering Facebook pages in the dark web. Add to that the fact that Facebook just announced its live streaming services.  And now Facebook also has money transfer services.

I foresee an entire new industry competing with Backpage.com. Each pimp or prostitute could potentially set up a complete “mini” backpage.com in the dark web using Facebook service. Live stream its offerings out to literally thousands of people which geo tracks back to the sender. Live streaming technology can reach out to literally tens of thousands of people simultaneously where they can interact together. Pimps could set up an entire network of referrals where they get a referral fee and provide booking services. The services would be prepaid through a Facebook money transfer system that is entirely anonymous, and nearly impossible to trace.

It seems this business is about to get a lot harder to make a case.
