LIVE STREAMING: The Gateway to Global Exploitation of Children
(One of the greatest challenges of the 21st century)
Live streaming is extraordinary new technology that can literally bring thousands of people together online “live” to exchange thoughts and ideas or just to watch an event. Unfortunately, child pornographers are using this technology to exploit children live on webcams. They can now charge for these events using cyber currency (bitcoin) and, within minutes, the event is over leaving no trace of the live stream or the financial transaction. No one (other than the viewers) will ever know it happened, except of course the child whose life is forever changed.
Technology is neither good or bad. It is how you choose to use it. Sadly, live streaming of child sexual abuse is fast becoming a worldwide phenomenon with cartels and pedophile rings maximizing the latest technologies and using it to generate millions of dollars by exploiting children in third world countries (AND THE U.S.). Currently, it is estimated that 50% of perpetrators live in the U.S.
This week we will look at reports from the South China Post and Europol (Europe’s Police Agency) as online child sexual abuse is listed as one of the Top 8 cyber crime trends in Europol’s Internet Organized Crime Threat Assessments report. We will also review the latest report from Brookings Institute in the U.S.
And, according to a report in the BBC, the UK’s “CEOP” Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre’s annual threat assessment of child exploitation and abuse states, “The number of still and moving child abuse images reported last year doubled in number. Children were forced to engage in sexual activity on live webcams in exchange for payment to the family or organized crime gangs.”
